The syllabary mentioned here was discovered on ancient Basque inscriptions in Spain and Portugal, remaining untranslated until 1979. Barry Fell observed similarities with the Algonquian syllabary in Canada and provided phonetic interpretations of the ancient Iberian inscriptions. The confirmation that these inscriptions are written in an early form of the Basque language was established by Imanol Agire, a Basque epigrapher, lexicographer, and expert on the history of world alphabets, in 1980 and 1981 (Fell 1982).
