The Ol Chiki script is the writing system used for the Santali language, primarily spoken by the Santal people in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. The script was created by Raghunath Murmu in 1925, and it has 30 characters. He created it in a conscious effort to provide the Santali people with a script that reflected their language’s phonetics.
The term “Ol Chiki” is derived from the Santali words “ol,” meaning ‘writing’ or ‘script,’ and “chiki,” meaning ‘seen’ or ‘visible.’ So, Ol Chiki literally translates to ‘seen writing’ or ‘visible script.’ The alphabet is known for its simplicity and phonetic nature. Each symbol represents a specific sound, making it quite straightforward to learn and use.
