The Martian alphabet refers to a constructed script and language produced by Hélène Smith (real name Catherine-Elise Müller), a 19th-century Swiss spiritual medium. She popularized the concept of automatic writing, which earned her admiration from the latter-day Surrealists. Her interplanetary psychic visions are extremely similar to contactee accounts from the 1950s and 1960s. She claimed communications from Mars in the Martian language. Her so-called Martian script is part of a fascinating historical episode blending psychology, mysticism, and linguistics.
