During the Bougainville Crisis from 1988 to 1998, Chief Peter Karatapi, the creator and head of the Otomaung cultural group, developed the Naasioi Otomaung Alphabet. This script offers an alternative method for writing Naasioi, a language spoken in the Kieta District of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. While currently utilized by a limited number of individuals, the term “otomaung” translates to “capable of expressing anything” and represents the initial letter. Inspired by ceremonial scarring, this alphabet holds cultural significance.
