The Bima language, referred to as “Bimanese,” is spoken by the Bima people on the eastern Indonesian island of Sumbawa. It is classified under the Bali-Sasak-Sumbawa subgroup of the Malayo-Polynesian branch within the Austronesian language family.
The Bima(nese) script, utilized for writing Bima, is closely linked to the Buginese script. Originating in the 14th century, this script was employed for documenting books and royal archives in the Bima Kingdom. By the 17th century, as the Bima community embraced Islam, they transitioned to writing in Malay using the Arabic script.
