Bopomofo (ㄅㄆㄇㄈ) is a phonetic alphabet used to transcribe Mandarin Chinese pronunciation, especially in Taiwan. It is primarily used as a teaching tool for children and learners of Mandarin. It’s also used in dictionaries, textbooks, and typing systems.
It was invented in the 1910s in China by the Republic of China government (pre-communist China) to standardize Mandarin pronunciation, and officially adopted in 1918. After the Chinese Civil War, the People’s Republic of China switched to Pinyin, while Taiwan continued to use Zhuyin (Bopomofo).
