The Brahmi script stands as one of the most important writing systems in the history of South Asia, regarded as the progenitor of most Indian scripts and several Southeast Asian scripts. It is believed to have emerged around the 3rd century BCE, though some scholars suggest it could date back to the 5th century BCE or even earlier. James Prinsep, a British scholar and antiquarian, deciphered Brahmi in the 1830s.
Initially utilized throughout the Indian subcontinent, including areas of present-day India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and parts of Afghanistan, it is prominently featured in Ashokan edicts from the 3rd century BCE.
These inscriptions can be found on pillars, rocks, and caves across India.
This text represents an alternate version of the Brahmi script. For further exploration, you can find another version in my book, “Learn to Write Brahmi.”
