The Byblos script, also referred to as the Byblos syllabary, Pseudo-hieroglyphic script, Proto-Byblian, Proto-Byblic, or Byblic, remains an undeciphered writing system. It is recognized from fourteen inscriptions discovered in Byblos, a coastal city in Lebanon.
The inscriptions are found on:
Bronze plates
Spatulas
Carvings in stone
These artifacts were unearthed by Maurice Dunand between 1928 and 1932 and were published in 1945 in his monograph, “Byblia Grammata.” The inscriptions are typically dated to the second millennium BC, likely occurring between the 18th and 15th centuries BC.
The syllabary featured in this book is derived from the list of Byblos sign values as outlined by Jan Best.
