Egyptian hieroglyphs, recognized as one of the oldest writing systems in the world, originated around 3100 BCE and were in use for over 3,500 years. They comprised logograms (representing words), phonograms (representing sounds), and determinatives (clarifying meanings), arranged in various orientations. Mainly utilized for religious, royal, and monumental inscriptions, hieroglyphs were deemed sacred and were predominantly comprehended by scribes and priests. The discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 was pivotal for their decipherment by Jean-François Champollion in 1822. Although hieroglyphs were eventually supplanted by simpler scripts like Demotic and Coptic, they remain essential for understanding ancient Egyptian civilization and have influenced modern language, art, and design. This book serves as an excellent introduction to learning how to write them.
