The Gupta script, also known as Gupta Brahmi, is an ancient script used in India during the Gupta Empire (approx. 320–550 CE). It evolved from the Ashokan Brahmi script and is considered a major transitional script in the history of South Asian writing systems. The script is characterised as Abugida – each consonant carries an inherent vowel (like /a/) that can be changed with diacritics. It is more rounded and flowing compared to Ashokan Brahmi.
The Gupta script helped standardize the classical Sanskrit language after centuries of regional variation. It is considered a bridge between ancient Brahmi and later Indian scripts like Devanagari. It is not used today, but it directly evolved into many important scripts of South and Southeast Asia. Gupta inscriptions were a tool of political messaging, often boasting of military conquests and divine rule. Its legacy spread far beyond India — from Nepal to Java to Tibet.
