The Isthmian script is an ancient collection of symbols discovered in inscriptions around the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, with origins tracing back to approximately 500 BCE to 500 CE, although the exact dates are still debated. This script is also referred to as the La Mojarra script and the Epi-Olmec script, indicating its connection to the post-Olmec period.
There is still no definitive conclusion on whether the Isthmian script constitutes a genuine writing system that accurately represents a spoken language or if it functions as a form of proto-writing. A contested partial decipherment suggests that this script bears structural similarities to the Maya script, employing one set of characters to denote morphemes and another set to signify syllables.
This book featured the Epiolmec syllabary in the International Phonetic Alphabet according to Kaufman and Justeson 1996.
The four most extensive Isthmian texts are those found on:
The La Mojarra Stela 1
The Tuxtla Statuette
Tres Zapotes Stela C
A Teotihuacan-style mask
