Until the mid-20th century, the Mahajani alphabet was utilized in northern India to transcribe languages such as Hindi, Marwari, and Punjabi. Primarily employed for commercial objectives, this script was part of the curriculum in schools across Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh, catering to students predominantly from merchant and trading backgrounds. It is believed to have evolved from the Kaithi script, incorporating elements from Devanagari.
