Dr. William Moon (1818-1894) was an Englishman who lost his sight at age 21 due to scarlet fever.
The “Moon alphabet” refers to a tactile writing system created by him in 1845, primarily designed to assist visually impaired individuals in reading and writing. The system uses raised symbols that are simplified versions of the Latin alphabet, making it easier for those who have lost their sight later in life to learn and use it compared to Braille.
