The Nabataean script was utilized by the Nabataeans, an ancient Arab civilization that flourished from the 4th century BCE to 106 CE in regions that are now part of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Israel. Although the Nabataeans were ethnically Arab, they primarily communicated in a dialect of Aramaic, which served as the common language of the Near East during that era. This script was derived from Aramaic, developing unique characteristics between the 2nd century BCE and the 4th century CE. Ultimately, the Nabataean script evolved into what we know today as Arabic script. Scholars draw upon their understanding of Aramaic to interpret Nabataean writings. The capital of the Nabataean Kingdom, Petra, is renowned for its stunning rock-cut architecture and monuments etched into the striking rose-red cliffs, including the famous Treasury (Al-Khazneh) and the Monastery (Ad Deir).
