The Rejang script (also known locally as Surat Ulu) is a traditional writing system from Bengkulu Province on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It was used to write the Rejang language, spoken by the indigenous Rejang people. Though its exact origins are unclear, the oldest known document dates back to the mid-18th century, and the script was actively used up until the 1960s, mainly for personal letters, poetry, and ritual texts.
The Rejang script belongs to the Southeast Asian Brahmic family of scripts, which also includes Javanese, Balinese, and Baybayin. It’s traditionally written on bark, bamboo, or palm leaves, often with a stylus or knife.
