Tirhuta, also known as Mithilakshar, is an ancient script historically used to write the Maithili language, spoken in the Mithila region of northern Bihar (India) and parts of southeastern Nepal. It was also used for Sanskrit in the region. Tirhuta is a Brahmic script, sharing roots with Devanagari, Bengali-Assamese, and Odia scripts. It evolved from earlier forms of Gupta Brahmi, like most South Asian scripts.
Tirhuta was once Maithili’s primary script before the 20th century. It was replaced over time by Devanagari due to political and practical factors. Maithili literature, poetry, astrology, and religious texts were once written in Tirhuta.
