The Sapphire ring

Realisation hit her suddenly. It was ever since she started wearing the ring that she couldn’t sleep anymore! The ring that she so loved. At first sight as soon as laid eyes on it, she knew it had to be hers. Now sitting pretty on her finger, sparkling even brighter than before. It was an antique, a stunning royal blue Kashmir sapphire ring, in a handmade platinum setting, adorned with diamonds and filigree. The detailed etching was something she hadn’t seen before. It cost her a small fortune, but it so called to her, she would pay whatever the old lady asked for it. The old lady who owned the corner store, warned her that she should choose another one as this one she said had a “JuJu” on it. I remember laughing when I heard her say that word, an adorable accent she had, Peruvian I guessed.

What set the deal for me was the price, an economical price for such a stunner!
I had to go back and ask her about this “JuJu”, she spoke about because ever since I wore the ring, many sleepless nights later, I felt uneasy.

I regularly remember dreaming, but now my dreams, more in the category of nightmares were becoming more real and vivid. I wondered if maybe my lack of sleep was for fear of having these terrible nightmares.

I looked at my reflection in the mirror, deadly pale, with dark circles around my eyes. I had been eating like I normally did, but I was losing weight. I couldn’t explain this as well. I told myself, that first thing tomorrow morning, I would pay that nice old lady a visit.

Night had fallen, I had to try to sleep. I took one of the sleeping pills recommended by a friend, and went to bed snuggling into the sheets, making myself as comfortable as I possibly could. I started reading my novel, hoping for a relaxing entry into sleephood!

Minutes later I awoke, but it felt like someone was shaking me to get me awake! A little surprised, I roused, maybe I dozed off while reading. I thought maybe a cup of green tea would work well. Getting out of bed I went into the kitchen and put the kettle on the fire. The flame wouldn’t light. I kept trying, on and on I pressed the flame spark… nothing…
Suddenly it blew open, explosive flames everywhere. My hair was on fire, I looked at my hands, also on fire, but the ring shone red and bright. I started running towards the bedroom. Screaming for help, my worst nightmare now coming true!

I entered my bedroom but what I saw made me freak out even more. Sleeping peacefully was me, under the blankets. I started waking ‘ME’ up, my fire-ablazed hands on her shoulders, shaking her viciously.

The next thing I remember is getting up, sharp pain running through my shoulder, like somebody had tried waking me up quite roughly! My skin was swollen, burnt, blisters erupting…
